Background : Laparoscopic surgery of gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is still in the early phase of the adoption curve, and more evidence is required to assess this procedure. This study aimed to evaluate the surgical and oncological outcomes of laparoscopic procedures for suspected GBC.

Methods : In this prospective study, data regarding suspected GBC treated with laparoscopic radical cholecystectomy in a tertiary care university hospital for T1 and T2 lesions was included during the period June 2021 to June 2023. Patient characteristics, surgical procedure details, surgical outcomes, and long-term outcomes have been analysed.

Results : Data of n=09 patients with suspected GBC who underwent laparoscopic radical cholecystectomy is prospectively collected. Among them, n=08 patients with pathological GBC were included in the study. Laparoscopic non-segmental wedge resection of the liver was performed in 11 patients. The median operation time was  220 min (range: 180-426 min), and the median intraoperative blood loss was 150 mL (range: 80–950 mL). The conversion and postoperative complication rates are 0% and 18%(n=2/11), respectively. During the follow-up period, the 6-month survival rate was 100% (7/7) with one patient not counted due to death other than a disease-related event.

Conclusions : Laparoscopic radical cholecystectomy emerges as a promising and viable treatment option, demonstrating favourable outcomes in carefully selected patients with suspected GBC. While these findings are encouraging, further research is essential to validate and contribute to the ongoing assessment of laparoscopic surgery for gallbladder carcinoma.
