Background : Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare tumors that affect the gastrointestinal tract. The liver is a common location for GIST metastases. Most GISTs occur in older adults with a median age of 60–65 years and slight male predominance. GISTs rarely occur in those under the age of 40 years. We present two cases of hepatic GIST metastasis that present in young adults with various symptoms.
Methods : A retrospective chart review was performed on two patients
Results : A 38-year-old woman came to hospital with a month history of right upper abdominal pain and mass. The patient was jaundice and febrile. The patient was diagnosed with cholangitis and HCC. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed a mass at right and left liver segments II, III, Iva, IVb, V, VI, VII, and VIII, thought to be HCC. Histology and immunohistochemistry showed liver GIST metastases. A 38-year-old man presented with a month history of right upper abdominal mass. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed suspected hepatoma at left liver with abscess at right lobe of liver and also suspected metastasis intrahepatic. Intraoperative findings was found a hard-cystic mass at left lobe of liver that contained brownish liquid. Histology and immunohistochemistry showed liver GIST. Both patient then was continued on imatinib chemotherapy.
Conclusions : Young adults with abdominal tumors or symptoms of cholangitis can be suspected of having GIST. The symptoms that arise are increasingly varied, so we as doctors need to be careful in diagnosing and providing informed consent to patients regarding further treatment
